Management Team


Darren Westlake, CEO, Co-founder

Named by Debrett’s as one of Britain’s 500 most influential people in 2015, Darren Westlake is co-founder and CEO of Crowdcube – the world’s first investment crowdfunding platform.

A serial entrepreneur with more than 20 years’ experience in the internet and telecoms industries, Darren launched and exited two companies before starting Crowdcube with Luke Lang in February 2011. In 2016 Darren was named by CityAM as one of its top 100 influential leaders in fintech and has been named by Debrett’s as one of Britain’s 500 most influential people two years running.

Luke Lang, CMO, Co-founder

A highly-qualified marketing and public relations specialist, Luke has worked in blue-chip brands as well as for start-up companies. He also ran his own marketing consultancy before launching Crowdcube with Darren Westlake in February 2011. Luke was named by Debrett’s as one of Britain’s 500 most influential people in 2016.

As CMO Luke regularly speaks at high-profile events and provides comment to the national and global media on topics such as the future of finance, entrepreneurs, the changing profile of investors and the regulatory environment. 

Bill Simmons, Chief Financial Officer

Bill has over 15 year's experience in the online, digital and technology sectors holding various financial, strategic and management positions.

A chartered management accountant, Bill has held FD and CFO positions at Ask Jeeves, Myspace and Rated People, and more recently has applied his skills & knowledge at a number of start-up and early stage businesses. He understands how difficult it is to raise finance for new companies and is passionate about the role we have helping finance businesses.


Matt Cooper, Chief Commercial Officer

Matt has twenty years’ experience, mainly spanning financial services and FMCG, along with a passion for disrupting established industries through innovative products and services. Matt is a regular guest speaker at both the London Business School and the London School of Economics on business and entrepreneurship.
Before joining Crowdcube, Matt was Sales Director at high profile FinTech MarketInvoice and prior to that held a senior leadership role at the One brand; driving the commercial success of the business resulted in a £10M donation to development projects in sub-Saharan Africa. His early career centred on the City of London where Matt worked for both US and European Investment Banks.

Simon Williams, Chairman

Simon has over 30 years of banking and investment experience having held senior executive positions across the world, including Citigroup and HSBC. Through his own company, Camelot Financial Management LLC, Simon Williams is a long-term supporter of fintech, having successfully invested in, and taken selective Board positions with, a number of fintech businesses.

In addition to his position at Crowdcube, Mr. Williams is an investor in LendingClub (NYSE:LC), the world's largest online lending marketplace, and in Nerdwallet Inc., and he currently acts as a Non-Executive Director to both companies. He was also an early investor in OnDeck Capital Inc. (ONDK), which provides capital to small businesses in the US - and where he is a former director.

Tim is a General Partner at Balderton Capital, joining in 2007. He was previously a partner of Goldman Sachs where he spent 18 years. At Goldman, Tim held various roles including Global Head of Equity Capital Markets (2002 to 2005) and Vice-Chairman of Goldman Sachs International (2005 to 2006).  Tim started to work with Balderton and its portfolio of companies in 2005. In 2006 Tim spent a period as non-executive chairman of Betfair.  Tim is also a Governor of Wellington College and the Wellington Academy; a Trustee of the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Simon Cook, Advisor

CEO of Draper Esprit, Simon has also been involved with the European VC industry since 1995. He co-founded Draper Esprit in 2005 and has been involved with a number of Europe’s most successful startups including Lovefilm (Amazon), Cambridge Silicon Radio (IPO), Virata (IPO), nCipher (IPO) and KVS (Symantec). Previously Simon was a partner with Elderstreet Investements and a Director at 3i. He was a computer games developer early in his career and is a graduate of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST).

Tim Draper, Advisor

Founder and Managing Partner of Draper Associates, Tim founded Draper Associates in July, 1985, which when joined by John Fisher and Steve Jurvetson became the venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson (now DFJ).

Tim is the creator of viral marketing, a marketing method for spreading a software application from customer to customer, instrumental to the successes of Hotmail and Skype among hundreds of others including Gmail and Yahoo! Mail.He founded the DFJ/Draper Network, a global network of venture funds who work together to improve service to entrepreneurs, covering 30 cities around the world. He has been listed as #46 of the most outstanding Harvard alumni, #7 on the Forbes Midas List, #1 Most Networked Venture Capitalist by Always On, and #98 on the 2014 Worth Magazine 100 Most Powerful People in Finance.
