Founded in Shoreditch in 2011, Grind has spread across London and evolved into an award-winning group, which has raised investment three times with Crowdcube and boast several thousand investors.

David's story

David founded Grind in 2011 with Kaz James. The company started life on London Old Street’s Silicon Roundabout, an area better known for some of London’s most prominent technology companies.

It started in 2010 when, sadly, David's father passed away, leaving behind a mobile phone business with several retail stores, including the Old Street site. David had a summer job working in the store when he was younger and was attached to the site but didn’t want to continue with the mobile phone business. He already had early plans to turn it into a coffee shop or wine bar when he decided to team up with his friend Kaz James.

Kaz met David after moving from Melbourne, Australia, to London, where the place to hang out that did amazing coffees was an important part of the culture. So when David mentioned to him that he was turning his dad’s old mobile phone shop into a coffee shop, Kaz was really keen to get involved.

Since then they have gone from strength to strength and now boast 11 sites around the capital.

Where are they now?

The Grind team have been busy. Fuelled by their own caffeine and killer soundtrack, they've transformed Grind into one of the most exciting hospitality brands in London.

Since their first raise with Crowdcube back in 2015, Grind has grown to eleven locations, plus a coffee roastery in Shoreditch.

In 2018, the group generated sales of £9.4m, with like-for-like sales growth of 16%.

They launched their Grind at Home retail range, headed up by their new Compostable Coffee Pods for Nespresso Machines. It's proved popular, with over 60,000 pods sold in the first three months.

They've outgrown the Roastery their community help fund in 2015 on Crowdcube and are now moving to a space five times the size to support our growth and the Grind at Home range.
