The ones whose ambition, courage and determination to leave a mark on the world, big or small, inspires us all.
At Crowdcube, we're on a mission to create a world that's jam-packed with these exciting businesses doing wonderful things, fuelled by their passionate communities. So far, we've helped over 720 businesses turn their supporters into shareholders and fuel their future at our humble home.
Even if the enthusiasm, bravery and ideas of entrepreneurs don’t always work out, we’re proud that people have had the chance to get over £21m back from their investments.
Let’s dive into our portfolio of startup, early and growth-stage businesses, funded by year, to find out where they are now, after raising investment with Crowdcube.
Of the 720 businesses we've fuelled over the last eight years, 619 are still trading, and 23 have delivered financial returns to their shareholders.
26% of the businesses to raise with Crowdcube are startups, 46% early-stage and 28% are growth-stage businesses. Over 100 are based outside of the UK.
Over 85% of our funded businesses are trading; this compares favourably to a report by the Office of National Statistics, which found that 50% of all new UK businesses fail after three years.
So far, more than 13,000 investors have had the chance to realise returns of over £21m from 23 of our businesses.
Investors have realised some healthy returns from businesses that have raised with Crowdcube.
Investors in Revolut celebrated a 19 times (that’s a cool 1,900%) return on their investment just two years after they backed the disruptive challenger bank. The fintech unicorn is now valued at over £1bn and first raised with Crowdcube just a year after they launched in a round led by venture-capital firms renowned for backing the likes of Facebook and Dropbox.
2,173 investors in Camden Town Brewery celebrated a 200% return on their investment. The craft brewer, famous for Camden Hells, raised £2.75m with Crowdcube and was acquired in the same year by AB InBev, the world’s largest brewer. Hail to the Hells Raisers!
Backers of E-Car Club got a 300% return on their investment when the eco-friendly, electric car-sharing club was acquired by Europcar. E-Car Club worked closely with councils, social landlords and community group partners to deliver improved economic, social and environmental outcomes for local residents.
The challenger bank, famous for its coral cards and committed community, has raised several times with us; most recently in 2018, when their community invested £20m. Investors have seen growth skyrocket over the years, and its recent valuation of $2bn in 2019 gave early investors a 25 times, or 2,500%, return on their investment, albeit only on paper. Mega Monzo!
There are two key, and very generous, tax breaks to look out for when it comes to investing on Crowdcube. Both of which can be carried back to the previous tax year.
