As we mark the milestone of reaching one million members, we wanted to celebrate you, our community, because you’re funding the wonderful.
Our community has made over 800,000 investments, with £1 billion having been invested in campaigns on Crowdcube.
Meanwhile, on average, investors have five businesses in their portfolios, and one avid investor has made 490 investments in total! Balderton Capital is crowned with the largest investment totalling £3,800,000, which was invested into Crowdcube during our 2018 funding round.
As we dive deeper into finding out more about our investor community, it’s clear to see that almost a third are aged between 25-34, a third live in London and two thirds are male.
One of our most proudest accomplishments at Crowdcube is that we’ve democratised investment, making it accessible from everyday investors to angels to institutions and VCs, offering a diverse range of opportunities that anyone (over the age of 18) can invest in, from just £10/€10. However, these figures are still showing a big investor gender gap, and there’s still so much more we can do to spread awareness and redress the balance.
So, what are you investing in?
Investor appetite for the food and beverage, fintech and consumer goods sectors is still incredibly high. However, business services has etched its way into our top 5 sectors.
This increase in B2B opportunities at Crowdcube is also a trend that’s reflected across the industry. Sifted reported that “this year so far, European fintechs have raked in €6.3bn; €5bn of which has gone to B2B fintechs across 373 deals.” This is from the rise of businesses like Klarna, Checkout.com and CurrencyCloud. We’ve also seen known B2C companies and funded community alumni; Monzo and Revolut launch new business products.
Have investment trends changed in light of Covid-19?
This year in particular, we’ve seen communities rally behind businesses, with 94% of investors thinking it is important, now more than ever, to support businesses they believe in, despite Covid-19. Two of the most popular campaigns of all time; what3words and Moneybox, have been during this pandemic and our funded community have grown their shareholder base to new highs, with record-breaking raises from the likes of Freetrade and Chip.
We’ve also seen a record-breaking Q3, which has been our second most successful quarter of all time!
- 88,000 investments were made, an increase of 76% compared to the previous quarter
- £67m was invested into campaigns; making it our second most successful quarter for investment ever
- 57 businesses hit their targets including record-breaking campaigns from Moneybox and what3words
- 11 businesses raised over £1m during the quarter, including Polysolar Limited, Small Robot Company, Sliabh Liag Distillers and Wirex
Every investment, big or small, is helping to fuel the next generation of businesses.
So that they can leave their mark on the world. And for that, we salute you.
