Idea

Problem

91% of award-worthy stand-up shows can’t be watched online. Of the 1,200+ shows created each year, a lot of great content is lost. That’s a problem for an estimated 5.8m UK comedy fans who have no dedicated source to catch-up or discover stand-up through and for 100s of comedians whose hard work disappears after its live performance.

Solution

To film great comedy shows that would otherwise be lost and monetise them online for fans to enjoy worldwide, sharing revenue with the comedians whilst preserving and showcasing their work. It’s a win-win.

Service & Revenue

Shows monetise via a subscription-video-on-demand (SVOD) service available via web, mobile and TV apps for £4.99p/m with a 7-day free trial. After 2 years of catalogue and tech developments, NextUp has yielded a £45 LTV and £15 CAC i.e. we feel ready for growth. Also, shows are licensed to third parties such as the BBC and Audible which accounted for 43% (£38k) of 2018 revenue. Total revenue: £136k, -£330k EBITDA.

Market

The £19b S-VOD market is growing by 8% YOY and is fragmenting into genre services such as HayU (reality), Shudder (horror), Crunchy Roll (anime), Acorn (see below). NextUp is the only platform specializing in live comedy and could have first-mover advantage.

Exit (S-VODs like NextUp sell)

Acorn TV is a niche S-VOD for 'British crime drama'. They gained 800,000 users and sold for £49m.
